Welcome to A Framework for Scientific Papers.
The overall goal of " A Framework for Scientific Papers" (AFSP) is to support curricula that use hypothesis-testing and written communication to learn scientific methods and content. The module is based on three general hypotheses:
1) Using a clear hypothesis-testing framework is a powerful method for scientific discovery (Shavelson and Towne, 2002).
2) Using available frameworks for both deductive and inductive reasoning can help to create and defend scientific models (Platt, 1964; Hill, 1965).
3) Using a single framework (hypothesis testing) can simplify the process of writing all sections of scientific papers (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion).
The AFSP module builds on principles introduced in the "Reasoned Writing" module. AFSP focuses on two specific objectives:
A) To examine how to use reasoning to develop and defend specific hypotheses. The AFSP module uses distinct terminology to reduce confusion between two important roles for scientific hypotheses: (1) as generalized models that explain natural phenomena; and (2) as measurable predictions that can be experimentally tested.
B) To help use hypothesis testing as a consistent framework to simplify the process of writing specific and persuasive scientific papers.
The AFSP module begins with a brief discussion of what hypotheses are, and why hypotheses provide a useful framework for papers. Most of AFSP explains one hypothesis-centered, reasoned framework to simplify writing papers in the Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion (IMRaD) format.
